Construction Paper : workshop with Suzie Smith

Saturday February 27th - 7:30 p.m.
> Arprim

For the Nuit blanche à Montréal, Arprim, centre d’essai en art imprimé and Atelier Graff offer two activities in connection with the exhibition Construction Paper by Manitoba artist Suzie Smith. Starting at 7:30 p.m., visitors are invited to meet with the artist for a friendly discussion (in English) about her printing practice, and various issues surrounding its examination of the paradoxical relationship between image and sculpture, as well as handcrafted and mass-produced objects. Afterwards, participants will be invited to make their own paper sculptures using silkscreen prints prepared by the artist as templates. Participants can then either follow the instructions to reassemble the actual object or, like Susie Smith, use its components to create new improvised shapes. There will be a second creation workshop at 9:30 p.m. for visitors that could not attend the discussion. The exhibition space will remain open until 11:30 p.m.

See you there!

Suzie Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts (BFA) from Concordia University and a master’s degree (MFA) from the Glasgow School of Art (Scotland). Since 2004, her work has been showcased in solo and group exhibitions in galleries, artist-run centres and museums in Canada and Europe. Besides her work in installation and print, she also regularly participates in artist residencies, and collaborates with various independent publishing houses and fanzines. A well-known activist artist in Manitoba where she lives and works, Suzie Smith was awarded several travel and development grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and the City of Winnipeg. Over the years she has taught numerous workshops and, since 2012, is a lecturer at the University of Manitoba.
