Atelier Graff is proud to welcome from February 27 to March 12, the artist Marjolaine Bourgeois from Moncton for a residency; it is a participation in the Programme d’échanges transcanadiens. Members and non-members are invited to view her work during an informal meeting on February 28 at 5 p.m. at 963 Rachel East.

Marjolaine Bourgeois mixes the art of printmaking and artist’s books with fibres. She prints on cloth, which she uses in collages. The resulting images allow heterogeneous elements to encounter each other and create strange and dreamlike worlds. Her art making is a hymn to traditional women’s crafts and is in constant relationship with time and «making». «I like to play with images, colors and patterns to make them clash between each other and raise questions. I print, dye, discolour and borough printed cloth for the purposes of cutting, interlacing, overlapping and finally sewing.»
Marjolaine Bourgeois will work on an artist’s book project Se créer des chimères during her residency at Atelier Graff. The texts will be printed using monoprint techniques and silkscreen; the books will then be assembled. «These printed pages on textiles express an obsession with the image; these images that scroll at top speed and in all spaces in our lives of profusion. Here however the nature and poetic character of the cloth images give them a curative quality.»

Marjolaine Bourgeois was born in Îles-de-la-Madeleine ; since 1976 she has been living and working in Moncton. She has studied there in education and visual arts, with a specialization in printmaking. We were able to admire her work recently at the Symposium d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, during the summer of 2013.

This cross-exchange with Imago has also enabled Veronique Vallières, from Atelier Graff, to fulfill a residency in Moncton in January 2014. This project has been made possible thanks to funding from the Programme d’appui à la francophonie canadienne of the Secrétariat aux affaires intergouvernementales canadiennes.
