Marc Garneau’s work is characterized by what one might call the "risk" of painting. In the tradition of automatist painting, his works bear the traces of a spontaneous and intuitive art form, in which the pentimenti, collaged canvas, the inclusion of found objects, the accumulation of various additions and the different stages of creation become components of the work in progress. The balance achieved by the piece is the result of a process, the traces of which are clearly visible on the surface. Each new intervention is instinctively guided by the elements already at hand, which in turn alter the next stage -a temporary condition that will ultimately lead to a painting. The final result emphasizes the centrality of the composition, the multiple tones, and the integration of form. This way of working compels the artist to consider each piece as though it were the first; none of his previous work offers a solution to the challenges posed by a new surface, material and different coloring. This desire to constantly rethink the painting issue and redefine the fundamental act of painting forms the basis of his process.
